Early In The Morning

EARLY IN THE MORNING Paul Stookey ŠPepamar Music Corp.- ASCAP

from the album "Peter Paul and Mary", Warner Bros.

A printer friendly .pdf version of this song is available. It requires a free copy of Adobe Reader. You can get the reader at www.adobe.com

This song is recorded in the key of Bb, so you must capo on the third fret to use these chords and match the recorded pitch. The song is played very briskly and is a good exercise in quick chord changes!

Noel: "I wrote 'Early In The Morning' in about one hour in my apartment on East fifth Street. It turned out to be such a great up tempo gospel piece that Peter and I were inspired to co-write "Very Last Day" as a sort of sequel. Though it seldom gets the credit it's due, gospel music is responsible for a lot of what has become part of the folk music tradition. As Mary has pointed out in her introductions from stage, much of the music of the faith community has wound its way through the labor movement of the '30s and '40s and the civil rights movement of the '50s and '60s. So many times it speaks of an ideal society; a 'heaven' if you will, a hope for a better, more just life."

                         G C G G C G

Well early in the morning, about the break of day,

              Bm Am - D7

I ask the Lord, "Help me find the way!"

                 G C G C G C G

Help me find the way to the promised land

            Em A7

This lonely body needs a helping hand

          G Em Bm D7 G C G C G C G

I ask the Lord to help me please find the way.

                     G C G C G

When the new day's a dawning, I bow my head in prayer.

              Bm Am - D7

I pray to the Lord, "Won't you lead me there?"

                   G C G C G C G

Won't you guide me safely to the Golden Stair?

                   Em A7

Won't you let this body your burden share?

              G Em Bm D7 C G C G C G C G C G C G C G

I pray to the Lord, "Won't you lead me please, lead me there?"

                  G C G G C G

When the judgment comes to find the world in shame

                 Bm Am - D7

When the trumpet blows won't you call my name?

                 G C G G C G

When the thunder rolls and the heavens rain

                   Em A7

When the sun turns black, never shine again

                 G Em Bm D7 G C G C G C G

When the trumpet blows, won't you call me please, call my name!
